The traditional British barbecue season peaks during the hot summer months between June and August. However, many get their grills out earlier in spring. So, when does this well-loved outdoor activity start for you?
The Perfect Months for British BBQ Season
Most Brits love a BBQ, and many are quick to dust off their trusty grills as summer approaches—usually between June and August. The weather is warmer and more settled, making it the perfect time for get-togethers and outdoor meals, with long evenings to cook and catch up.
But if you can’t wait to get behind the grill (and who could blame you?), you can get the BBQ going as early as April or May. Spring brings the first signs of warmer weather, making it a great way to shake off the winter blues and make the most of the lighter evenings. Not to mention bank holidays like Easter BBQ and the early May bank holiday, which are the perfect excuse to whack the barbecue on and enjoy an al fresco meal in the garden.

Hyrbid BBQ to the rescue
The secret to a good barbecue is using the right grill. The charcoal vs gas BBQ debate has been going on for years, but these two sure are summer stapels. If you’re still undecided, a hybrid BBQ could be the solution, especially if you need to invest in a new one soon.
This type of grill gives you the best of both worlds: you get that authentic charcoal-grilled flavour with the convenience of a gas-powered grill. It’s perfect for those early barbecues when you’re not sure what the weather is going to do. For instance, if it’s windy or rainy, you can opt for a gas grill to get the cooking done quickly. But if the weather’s clear and you’re in the mood for that smoky flavour, switch to charcoal BBQ.
Pair the grill with a fire pit
If you decide to start in early spring, expect the temperature to still feel a bit like winter. While a BBQ might keep you (the griller) warm, a fire pit on standby will help keep your guests comfortable, too. This comes in especially handy if the celebration goes into the late evening, with the added bonus of keeping the area well-lit.
It’s also the perfect spot for gathering after the BBQ to have a chat, toast some marshmallows, or just relax as the evening gets cooler.
Set up the BBQ next to the summer house
We all hope for sunshine in summer or even in early spring, but we all know how unpredictable the British weather can be. So, how about setting up your grill next to a summer house or under an extended roof of your garden room for some shelter if the weather suddenly changes? That way, you can keep BBQing, no matter what the weather throws your way.
Of course, there are a few safety things to keep in mind. FKeep the BBQ a safe distance from walls, furniture, or anything flammable. And always have a fire extinguisher close by, just in case.
And if you’re grilling under an extended roof, shade sail, or parasol, this guide can help you control the smoke and keep the grill lit: BBQ in Windy Weather.
Round-up
Many people prefer to wait for the warmth of summer before BBQing. But if you can’t bear to wait that long, get your BBQ out around April or May and enjoy a spring cookout. It’s totally up to you when you want to show off your grilling skills and have your family and friends round.
